Pokey gives a squawk of surprise, but manages to move his head enough so that the eyebeams tear through the side of his face instead of dead-on. Which still hurts like hell enough that he takes his foot off Black Mage's throat.
He should run. He needs to get out or he's going to die and that'd be pointless. But he can't move. He simply can't will himself to leave.
And for once? It isn't out of fear. Not really.
He's enraged. Just utterly enraged that Black Mage would threaten that, and can probably make good on it no matter what he does, but Pokey has to DO something about it. It's the first time he's really felt the need to act on protecting others, on protecting and helping his friends.
Either he dies or, or Black Mage does. So while his foot isn't on BM's throat? Still taking another swing at Black Mage's head with his bat.]
